Established in 1816, American Bible Society history follows closely and even intersects the history of our nation. In fact, ABS’ early leadership reads like a Who’s Who of patriots. Our first president was Elias Boudinot, former president of the Continental Congress. John Jay, John Quincy Adams, DeWitt Clinton and James Fennimore Cooper also played significant roles, as did Rutherford B. Hayes, Benjamin Harrison and Francis Scott Key. In 1809, several believers gathered in lower Manhattan, New York, to discuss the city’s spiritual needs. Among them were community pillars including Henry Rutgers (Rutgers University) and William Colgate (Colgate Palmolive Corp). They formed the New York Bible Society, later renamed International Bible Society, and now Biblica.
Our Bible outreach soon spread as far and rapidly as the young nation itself through outreach to mariners, soldiers, and pioneers heading west. And in 1810, the fledgling society funded its first translation, William Carey’s Bengali Bible translation in India.
Throughout our first 200 years, Biblica ministry was interwoven with historic times and worldwide events including: providing Bibles in 65 languages to U.S. immigrants for over 135 years, placing decision pages in Scriptures for Billy Sunday’s evangelism crusades, giving Bibles to soldiers in WWI and WWII, providing more than 4 million Scriptures to people in the Soviet Union following the collapse, and ministering to more than a quarter million survivors of the 2005 Indian Ocean tsunami.
In 2007 International Bible Society (IBS) and Send the Light (STL) merged to multiply our evangelism and discipleship efforts, and in 2009, we formed Biblica and celebrated 200 years of ministry.
Today, Biblica works in 55 countries in six regions of the world. Our global ministry continues to impact various groups such as children, at-risk teens, the unreached, disaster survivors, prisoners, and refugees.
Biblica has translated, published, and provided more than 650 million Bibles and biblical resources to bring the good news of God’s love and mercy to people worldwide.

THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, BIBLE SOCIETIES EMERGED WHENEVER CHRISTIANS CAME TOGETHER and realized their need for Scriptures that everyone could access and relate to in their own language and cultural perspectives. There was great a sense of ownership and partnership as these initial Bible Societies partnered with the Local Church to see new congregations grow in discipleship and experience the Word of God in a way that truly touched their hearts. Thus, this became the guiding mission of Bible Societies around the world.
In Malaysia, organized Bible Society work has been going on since 1815. Then, on 15 October 1985, the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) was officially formed after becoming independent from the Bible Society of Singapore, Malaysia & Brunei. We continue our work today as a member of the United Bible Societies Fellowship - the international body for Bible Societies.
BSM serves the Malaysian Church by proactively advocating and being a partner-resource for the Word of God in Missions. We work with churches and organizations to fulfill the Great Commission by making the Word of God easily available and accessible to all.
BSM has also spearheaded and coordinated numerous projects to further the Bible Cause in Malaysia. Such projects have resulted in the Bahasa Malaysia Alkitab - the complete Bible in the Malaysian national language. We have also partnered with other mission agencies to translate the Scriptures into various ethnic dialects so the natives of Malaysia (such as the indigenous people of Sabah and Sarawak) may come to know Christ through the Scriptures in their own language.

The United Bible Societies is made up of 145 national Bible Societies operating in over 200 countries and territories. Together, they are the biggest translator, publisher and distributor of the Bible in the world. They are also active in areas such as literacy training, HIV and AIDS prevention and disaster relief. Bible Societies work with all Christian Churches and many international non-governmental organisations.
Bible Societies are committed to finding new and imaginative ways to draw people into the Bible. Each is unique – some are large organisations delivering sophisticated Bible advocacy campaigns, others are small offices distributing Scriptures to people living below the poverty line.
Translating the Bible remains at the heart of what we do. There are now more than 450 complete Bible translations (30 per cent of which include the Deuterocanon) and each year more are added. Currently, there are Scriptures available in 2,527 of the world’s estimated 6,500 languages. Our translation policy ensures we have translation guidelines that are acceptable to the Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox Churches. Bible Societies are dedicated to faithfully delivering new translations to Christians anywhere who have never had a Bible in their own language.
The fellowship is incorporated as United Bible Societies, a corporation registered in the state of Delaware, USA, in 1946. The affairs of the fellowship are administered on its behalf by the United Bible Societies Association (UBSA) at the UBS World Service Centre in Reading Bridge House, Reading RG1 8PJ, England. UBSA is a company limited by guarantee, registered in England and Wales N.o. 2264875. It is also a registered charity, N.o. 800058.
This provides the resources to:
- Coordinate the work of the growing number of national Bible Societies.
- Act as a hub for communication and financial transactions.
- Provide specialist central resources that reduce duplication.
- Represent the global body of Bible Societies.
All national Bible Societies work to make the Bible available and affordable in their own countries, through translation, distribution and production.
